A bit of history about this paper is required. It began as a critique, submitted to American Journal of Botany (AJB), of Suaza-Gaviria et al. (2017, AJB 104:24-38). This seemed the appropriate way to express disagreement, especially given the statement on the journal website: "In addition to reports of original research in all areas of plant science, the Journal contains Brief Communications and Special Papers, which include reviews, critiques, and analyses of controversial subjects." After reading our critique, the AJB editor suggested that instead of a commentary, we could turn our essay into an "informative synthesis of comparative inflorescence architecture in the Santalales". This is what we did, i.e. generate an original research paper (which delayed publication for over one year). Our experience draws into question the purpose of a critique. Is it sufficient to point out the problems with a research approach or does one have to actually do the research correctly to publish a critique? In addition to the manuscript, we included additional supporting files, one of which (Supplement 12) was a line-by-line critique of Suaza-Gaviria et al. (2017). At a later stage of the review process, we were asked to remove Supplement 12. Because we feel it is important for readers of AJB to hear all of our objections to the Suaza-Gaviria et al. (2017) paper, and to correct many errors and misconceptions, Appendix 12 is made available HERE.
